Hanwha Energy Opens Ireland’s First Hybridised Grid-Stabilisation System

2026. 03. 06

Hanwha Energy and its Irish partner Lumcloon Energy officially opened Ireland’s first hybridised grid-stabilisation system on 6 March 2026.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly, marking a significant milestone in Ireland’s energy transition.

The Shannonbridge B project combines a 4,000 MVA Synchronous Condenser with a 180 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and has the capability to export up to 20MW of electricity to the national grid for 9 hours. Construction commenced in 2023 and was completed in the second half of 2025. The facility is situated adjacent to the 220kV Shannonbridge transmission station, enabling its dual-technology approach to enhance the stability and dependability of renewable energy sources.

The Synchronous Condenser technology uses a flywheel-linked generator to store energy, which can be deployed to mitigate frequency variations and improve system inertia. The BESS component stores surplus renewable energy and releases it onto the national grid as needed. Together, these technologies form a first-of-its-kind hybrid configuration in Ireland, designed to strengthen grid resilience as the country moves toward higher levels of renewable energy.

The project also carries significance for the local community in Co. Offaly, located alongside the former peat-fired power station in Shannonbridge. It represents both the physical transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and an investment in regional employment through the creation of skilled jobs in the energy sector.

Jaekyu Lee, CEO of Hanwha Energy, stated: “In today’s world, energy security has become just as important as energy transition. Projects like Shannonbridge B strengthen Ireland’s independence and resilience, ensuring that Ireland’s electricity system remains secure, reliable, and less exposed to global energy shocks. This project reinforces the strong economic and technological ties between Korea and Ireland, and sets a new global benchmark for grid stabilisation.”

Hanwha Energy continues to expand its grid stabilisation portfolio across Europe, with a 4GW pipeline in Italy and Spain focused on BESS and hybrid projects.
